It's been WAY too long since I've been able to participate in WeWriWa, and I'm thrilled I can do so again. Lord Rakehell's Love is a novella which commences The Curse of True Love Series--where Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, decides to play matchmaker in Regency London, but with unexpected results.
In this scene, Aphrodite is commiserating with her true love, Ares, the god of war, about how things are not working out with this couple as she'd hoped for.
"He is a notorious rake, while she is a wallflower," he said.
"That is what makes them perfectly suited!"
"Well, we did discuss cursing them, with true love, and that is what appears to have happened."
"We may have discussed it, but this is not at all what I envisioned."
"Did you use an enchantment," Ares asked, "or was it a spell? Maybe you should have attempted a love potion instead."
"I appreciate your assistance, dearest, truly I do. But it is akin to me advising you which helmet to wear in battle--or how best to wield a sword against your enemies."

"He is a notorious rake, while she is a wallflower," he said.
"That is what makes them perfectly suited!"
LOL, isn't that just the way it works? Now we know why so many opposites hook up together.
Glad to see you back on the WeWriWa circuit!

VERY amusing and excellent point that Ares is hardly the right person to give advice on tactics of love spells etc. Really enjoyed the excerpt!

Thanks, Veronica! They make a fun couple, since they're also an "opposites attract" pairing. LOL

Yeah, this is a fun dynamic between Ares and Aphrodite; bantering and even bickering just a little, but you can tell they still love each other. Most pop culture representations of these two I can think of, (basically Valentine and Hercules/Xena,) depict them as bitter exes.
Though I can see Aphrodite's point about telling her how to do her job, I can't help but notice the flip-side, that he seems to be showing more interest in love than she is in fighting. I guess that generally the happy medium is finding a way to express that interest in your partner's job without going too far; letting them use you as a sounding board for whatever work problems they're having. Which is maybe the context for the entire snippet.

Thanks, Karen!
Chris, you're right about Ares showing more interest in the love aspects than Aphrodite does in the war ones. He wants her to finish her matchmaking so they can return to Mt. Olympus. :) But he ends up enjoying their sojourn more than he anticipated. LOL A great point about partners finding that happy medium!
